How you can get involved with giving blood.
As many of you will know, World Blood Donor Day 2016 occurred on Tuesday the 14th of June this year. World Blood Donor Day highlights the need for blood donation and aims to improve the safety and adequacy of national blood supplies by promoting a substantial increase in the number of safe, voluntary, unpaid donors who give blood regularly.
This year, the theme of World Blood Donor Day is "Blood connects us all", emphasizing the common bond that all people share in their blood. The slogan, "Share life, give blood" draws attention to the role that voluntary donation systems play.
About 108 million blood donations are collected globally every year. According to sources quoted in The Independent, the NHS in England alone needs about 6,000 blood donations every day, or about 200,000 new donors every year.
Unfortunately, in many countries, especially those with a low average income, demand exceeds supply, and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations.
In the UK, anyone between the age of seventeen and sixty six may donate blood, if they weight more than seven stone and are fit and healthy, while those over 70 who have donated within the last two years may continue to do so.
